Glenlyon Estate has one of the oldest private hydro schemes in Scotland. It was originally installed in the 1930s generating electricity by harnessing the power from the Finduie Burn providing electricity for the main house, cottages and farm steading. Following the acquisition of the estate by Mr & Mrs Wotherspoon in 2003, it was decided to upgrade and modernise the hydro scheme allowing for an increased in capacity and power generation. The new 950KW generator was installed and started generating in 2004, it provides a valuable sustainable source of income for the estate. The scheme consists of a modernised powerhouse situated behind the main house, which is fed by a 1.8km underground pipe from the Glenmolen corrie.
